Preseason XC Countdown: Boys #10

<p> Texas MileSplit is counting down the 12 days until the first full weekend of cross country meets. &nbsp; Each day we will highlight one boys team and one girls team, with the idea that they are &quot;programs to watch&quot; for the upcoming season. &nbsp; This series is not intended to be a true ranking of the top 12 teams in the state overall, but instead an opportunity to highlight schools that have had strong recent success or have lots of talent returning for this fall.</p>

You don't often see a competitive boys' team that only graduates one runner over a two-year span, but this is one.

There are at least three strong contenders for the new 5A title entering the fall season, and Wakeland is one of them.  What makes this team stand out?  The Wolverines made a huge leap forward from 2012 to 2013, thanks largely to the infusion of three new freshmen that made the team's top 7 for the state meet (as opposed to only one senior on that squad).  Add in the three sophomores they ran at last year's 4A state meet, where they finished third, and you can tell that Wakeland has an extremely bright future.  The Wolverines will not graduate a single one of their projected top 7 for 2014, meaning they only lose one runner over the two-year span.  That kind of youth is very rare in boys' competition, and it gives this team a longer window to try to bring home a state title: they should contend this year, but might not reach their full peak until 2015.  It's not hard to imagine this team with at least three sub-16 runners this fall, and if one of the depth runners can close the gap between the 5-6-7 runners and the tightly-packed front four, Wakeland will be formidable.
