Isaiah Lucas talks about the wild finish in the 110H final at the 2015 state meet

Cypress Falls' Isaiah Lucas is one of the top returning hurdlers in the state, nation, and the world.  Check out his  Q and A with TX MileSplit.

TX MileSplit:  Last Spring, you placed second at the state meet in the 110H, take us through the race, especially the dramatic finish.  Was there any extra motivation to win the 300H after that?

Isaiah:  The 110H at state last year was a really fun race!  The amount of competition there was overwhelming and I knew it wasn't going to be a walk in the park.  Not only did I have to warm up more than I usually did, I also had to mentally prepare myself so that I wouldn't be discouraged when I got to the line.  At the beginning of the race I came off to a rocky start, but I was able to get myself under control as the race went on.  As the other two competitors and I crossed the finish line, the crowd started to roar, and I had no idea what was going on.  I didn't know who won, what the times were, or anything.  Once I saw the times and the places that we got, I was more than excited.  That was definitely one of my top and favorite races that I've ran.

TX MileSplit:  Over the summer, you place third in the 110H at the IAAF World Youth Championships in Cali, Colombia.   What was that experience like and how did that shape you as an athlete moving forward?

Isaiah:  The experience felt so surreal and I feel like it shaped me to be a better athlete because I got to see what it was like to perform on the international level.

TX MileSplit:  Outside of competing, what was cool about making team USA?

Isaiah:  Aside from competing in Colombia, it was interesting to interact with different people and experience different cultures.

TX MileSplit:  What are your goals for this upcoming season?

Isaiah:  My goal this season is to PR at every meet in at least one event.

TX MileSplit:  What is it like having a teammate and training partner like Tyler Guillory with you every day in practice?

Isaiah:  Having a training partner like Tyler is great!  He always pushes me every time we run together and I feel that everyone needs that.

TX MileSplit:  Which hurdle race is your favorite, why?

Isaiah:  If I had to choose my favorite hurdle race, it would have to be the 110H.  I feel like it's a thrill and you have no room for error, which makes it even more intense.

TX MileSplit:  Do you have any pre meet/race rituals, if so, what are they?

Isaiah:  Before a meet, I stretch and do drills while I listen to music and tune everything out.

TX MileSplit:  Later this year, the new super hero movie Batman vs Superman comes out.  In your opinion, who wins the battle between the two and why?

Isaiah:  I think Superman would win.  Superman and Batman are very intelligent, but Superman has powers (unlike Batman), so I feel like that would enhance his chances of winning.
