11-Year-Old Miami Boy Dies Following Track Practice At Miami Northwestern High

An 11-year-old boy from Miami who was a member of the Metro Dade Track Club died following track practice at Miami Northwestern High late Wednesday, WSVN.com reported.

Officials reported that the boy, Kaleb Harris, who was a student at Florida International Academy Charter School in Opa-locka, collapsed before track practice. Miami Fire Rescue officials responded to the scene at Miami Northwestern High just after 6:30 p.m. Harris reportedly went into cardiac arrest.

"We understand that this young man was part of an athletic club and was just starting his warm-up on the track when several people witnessed him collapse," Miami Fire Rescue Capt. Ignatius Carroll told WSVN.

Reports said Harris' mother was in the stands when he collapsed. She didn't realized Harris had collapsed until she ran over to the track.

Efforts to save Harris were issued by paramedics on the scene, but when Harris arrived at Ryder Trauma Center in Miami, pediatric doctors took over. Medical personnel were not able to revive Harris.

Late Wednesday, Florida International Academy Charter issued a statement that read: "The faculty, staff, administration, and board of governors of Florida International Academy expresses their deep condolences to the family. Our entire community is grief-stricken at this tragic sudden loss of our beloved student. At this time we are focusing on meeting the needs of the students on camps who are heartbroken."

Miami-Dade Public Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho tweeted his condolences.
