At Flower Mound, our track team has a strong foundation for distance runners as we saw in the Cross Country season. We have Sophomore sensation, Alex Maier, who is currently ranked #10 in the Nation in the Track 5K as well as #6 in the state in the 1600m, and Laura Fairchild is currently #8 in the state in the 1600m as well. We also have a series of athletes who excel in other aspects of the sport, Pole Vaulter Raegan Smith has cleared 11-0 in pole vault so far this season, and Tonia Adeyemi is #37 in the state in the 300m hurdles as well. These athletes push themselves to always get better and someday even be the best in the state.
Overall, all of our athletes have had a great season. At this point, all of our JV athletes and some of our varsity athletes have had an abrupt end to their season at the UIL district meet. In track, the district meets are the final meet of the year for all JV athletes, and the Varsity athletes move on based on their performances. Sadly, that means that not all of our athletes will have the opportunity to compete anymore this season.
One athlete, Alex Maier, has the potential to make it all the way to state and event to national level meets. It has been predicted Alex will excel all the way to state and possibly win in both the 3200m and the 1600m, as well as pose a challenge on the national level. I had the opportunity to speak with Alex after he ran in the district meet about his plans for national meets as well as the competition in our district. It is well known that the 5-6A district is one of the more challenging districts for a distance runner, as a vast majority of the schools have very fast students. When I spoke with Alex, he told me that being in a strong district "helped push (him to) progress throughout the season." To excel at the level that Alex races at, he has to keep his mind focused on one thing at a time and at this time, He has his mind focused solely on the UIL meets lined up for the rest of the season and will be focusing on the championship meets afterward.
We wish the best of luck to all of the Flower Mound track athletes throughout this season and hope to see them all excel into the state meet.
