Texas UIL State Meet Review: Top Performers

In the 1A girls, we had a similar battle. Sienna Collins from Saltillo had the trifecta on her mind. We mentioned that Jake Merrell was the first male to compete the trifecta. Well, he was not the first UIL athlete to do so. That is because Collins races were first, so technically, she is the first UIL athlete to compete the distance trifecta. She won the 800m, 1600m, and the 3200m. Just like Merrell, she collected two 1A state records in doing so. Collins won the 3200m after Thursdays rain delay and Friday night is when she went on her record breaking binge. She won the 800m in 2:19.75 and the 1600m in 5:15.40 for her two records and won the 3200m win was in 11:33.35.

Nueces Canyon sophomore Camille Harris was right there with Collins for the ride. Harris finished right behind Collins for second in all three races including her 5:16.10, dipping under the former 1A state record. Harris finished with quite the weekend for a young runner and looks to come back and compete for golds next year.

In the girls 6A distances, we saw Houston Lamar's Julia Heymach going for it all as well. She took on the 3200m first on Friday morning. Heymach cruised to a 10:30.75 win. On Saturday, the 6A show was center stage and Heymach first hit the track in the 800m. She won that with a very fast 2:07.86. In the 1600m, she was on the track again for one last time as a UIL athlete. The triple crown wasn't meant to be as she took second place. Heymach was still able to run 4:48.70 for an elite time.

Heymach isn't the only elite athlete at Houston Lamar. Her teammate and partner in crime Milan Young teamed together to score enough points to take the second place team trophy home. Young ran in one of the fastest 100H races in recent history. She came out of the battle with a second place finish in a very fast 13.44. That wasn't all on the docket for Young's evening. She still had the 300H left to compete in. In that race, Young raced around the track crossing the line first for her first state championship and doing so in a new 6A UIL record 40.97. Young improved both of her places from last year by one spot each.
