Salute To Seniors: Sal Guli

Athlete: Sal Guli

School: Frisco Wakeland

What was your most memorable race/moment?
Winning the Region II-5A Discus at UT Arlington was my most memorable moment from my high school career. Receiving that UIL medal and standing on the podium was a amazing feeling and accomplishment.

Who would you consider your biggest competition over your four years?
Will Petersson, who graduated from Centennial high school last year and now throws for Texa A&M, was my biggest competition these last four years. I constantly came in second to him in the discus not only at school meets but during the summer at TAAF meets. I'm glad he was a year older than me and I was able to win a lot of gold this year after all those silver medals.

What was your greatest accomplishment?
Would be winning District, Area and Regional gold in the discus and qualifying for State. To be the first thrower from my school to accomplish all that was such a great ending to my high school career.

What will you miss the most?
My coaches have been there since day one, pushing me to accomplish great things, and I will miss them and our great times together.

What advice would you give to younger athletes?
My advice would be to work hard and push yourself. It's a small window and if you want to win medals and set records you need to work hard and take practice seriously

What influence has your coach had with respect to your performance and overall life goals?
Coach Thorne and Coach Oglesbee saw the desire and drive I had to break the school record and go to State in discus since my freshman year and gave me plenty of support and never let my confidence get down. The pep talks all paid off my senior year and I will never forget them and what they did for me.

What are your college plans?
I received a track and field scholarship offer from Southern Arkansas University and will attend and throw for them in the fall. I look forward to competing at the NCAA Division II level and setting goals for my college career.

Who would you like to say 'thank you' to?
To my parents and grandparents for coming to my meets and cheering me on and to my summer track and high school coaches for all the help and coaching over the years.
