All State Honor Roll: 2017 Boys Hurdles

#3. JUSTIN YOUNG - Wylie East

Justin Young of Wylie East takes the third spot in our All-State honor roll. This season, there were some very tough hurdlers in the state making this a tough event to judge. With many of the hurdlers having some big time stats, the overall decision maker came down to Young winning two 5A state titles. Yes, that means his ability to blaze the track as a dual hurdler at the highest level in the toughest state in high school track and field carried weight.

#2. CHARLES BROCKMAN III

The decision for the top two was almost an impossible decision. These two guys are not only two of Texas' best dual hurdlers, but they are two of the best 2017 in the nation if not a certain 1-2 as far as being all around hurdlers. Charles Brockman III had an unprecedented season. He ran to so many top times and honors for the season, I'm not sure he can even keep up with them. He took second and third at the 6A state meet in the two hurdle events. That is usually the end of the season for most, but was just the beginning for Brockman III. From there he took his show to the national level dropping a 13.60 giving him the #8 national ranking. He also took to the track nationally in his best event, the 300H dropping 35.97 and 35.62 ranking him #2 nationally and in the top 10 as a high schooler ever in the event. Brockman also upped it by taking on the 400H event running to an eye popping 50.70 PR and a #3 national ranking.

#1. ERIC EDWARDS

That's right, the only Texan capable of earning this spot over Charles Brockman III is Eric Edwards, but believe me it was a tough decision between these two.

What put Edwards in the top spot over Brockman III? Check out the athlete comparison on the next page to see how tough these guys are and close in performances, but the deciding factor was.....Texas Relays. Edwards took the victory in the 300h over Brockman III and that was what stood out as the difference. Edwards won every 2017 head to head battle in the 110s and had the upper hand in the times. Brockman III dominated the times between the two in the longer hurdles and won every head to head battle in 2017 except that one race, which was almost as close and exciting as they come.

What else did Edwards do? Well, he won every single 110 race except for two, and in those two races it took kids from other states to beat him...kids who have competed internationally in track and field (and he still finished second in both races). Oh yeah, amongst those many victories you can include a Texas 6A title, a USA Jr. National title that earned him a spot on the Pan American Team USA squad, and a wind legal 13.32 for the US #1 rankings.
