The North Texas Jackrabbits Avoid Disaster in 4x400 And Qualify For Finals

The North Texas Jackrabbits interview after winning 4x400 heat

When you run relays, you never know what to expect. Lots of things can go wrong and almost anything can happen. Just ask the North Texas Jackrabbits. They encountered the unusual in the boys 12 yo 4x400 relay.

Yesterday, they were in control of heat two when after the second exchange, the third leg loses his shoe in the middle of the race. That just happened to be almost at the very beginning of his leg. At the exchange, the Jackrabbit's second leg (Prentice Sanders) stepped on the heel of the third leg's (Damarion McPherson) foot causing his shoe to become loose. Wouldn't you know it, after a couple of steps the shoe came flying off and the crown ooohed and aaahed as they watched McPherson run the entire lap with one shoe.

Fortunate enough for the team, first leg, Ross Tejada and Sanders developed a large enough lead that McPherson was able to run clean from traffic and try to make his leg as as comfortable as possible until his exchange.

Considering there was a lost shoe, the Jackrabbits still managed to PR and run the second fastest time of the day with a 3:59.06. When asked what they could do in the final to drop their time, anchor leg Charis Jackson eloquently stated, "Keep McPerson from losing his shoe."

If they manage to keep all shoes on, how fast can the Jackrabbits run? Can they run faster and beat top seeded H-Town TC and hold off a strong Miami Gardens Express to win the 4x400 title? Only time will tell. Keep it locked here on TX MileSplit and see how the North Texas Jackrabbits fair in the 4x400 on Saturday afternoon.
