Baylor Freshman Howard Fields Stays Alive For U20 Medal

Baylor freshman and Manvel grad, Howard (Trey) Fields III qualified for the IAAF U20 World Championships 400m finals in Tampere, Finland.

The 2017 UIL 5A 400m champ helped lead his Manvel Mavericks to the UIL 5A team titles. Now, he is looking to build on the momentum he generated at the end of his NCAA track season.

In late May, Fields qualified for the NCAA D1 West Prelims in the 400m and earned All-American honors with his Baylor 4x400 team. Following the NCAA Chamipionships, he won the USATF national title in the 400m, earning his bid to Finland and an opportunity for a medal as he ran a 45.50 PR.

On Wednesday, Fields ran a 47.08 in his qualifying preliminary race. Today, he followed that performance up with a 46.53 run in the semi-final heat 3. Today's performance gave him the seventh fastest time from the semis and likely the lane one draw for the finals. The finals are Friday 1:20 p.m. CST.

Fields is looking to be the second Baylor Bear and American to win a medal at the IAAF U 20s. Two years ago, current Baylor teammate Wil London (Waco High) won the silver medal at the IAAF World U20 Championships.

USA teammate Umajesty Williams also ran in the semi-finals, but ran 46.72 good enough for only the 10th fastest time and not a finals qualifying spot.
