The Sam Houston men's cross country team finished 20th out of 37 university and junior college teams competing in the Memphis Twilight Classic hosted by Christian Brothers University Saturday night.

Clint Anders paced the Bearkats with a 76th place time of 26:22.80 on the 8K course.

Other Sam Houston finishes and times included Ryan Saam 26:44.27 (94th), Patrick Pitts 26:46.72 (97th); Patrick Krol 27:06.64 (110th) and Austin Brown 28:39.18 (160th).

Ben Cheruiyot of Auburn won the individual title in the men's race with a clocking of 23:15.96.

Eastern Kentucky won the men's championship with an average time of 24:21.24. Arkansas-Little Rock was the runner-up. Harding, Auburn and Stephen F. Austin rounded out the top five.

More than 500 athletes competed in this year's races along with several unattached competitors. The race marked the Bearkats first trip to the Twilight Classic.

"We wanted to do something different this year and go to a larger meet than we typically do," cross country coach Jesse Parker said. "This is one of the largest meets in the Southeast and we're excited about having an opportunity to compete."

The meet was the first time this season the Bearkats will run their entire team.
