This weekend, the Region II-6A meet will go down at Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie, Texas. It looks to be as competitive of a meet as always. What is unique about this region is that it contains schools from three different metropolitan areas from the state. Schools from the south and eastern part of the Dallas area will compete against schools from the northern Houston area as long as schools from the northern Austin area.
Headlining the meet will be The Woodlands boys who are the back the back UIL 6A state champions. The Highlanders are ranked #2 in the Flo50 rankings and have an excellent shot at a three-peat. College Park who comes in having climbed up to a #4 ranking will look to challenge their cross town rival. Several other teams will be looking to get one of the four qualifying spots will be surprise team and #6 Klein, #17 Montgomery, and #18 Round Rock Stony Point.
On the girls side, Flo50 #6 Houston Stratford looks to be in good shape for a return trip to the state meet. Last year, their young squad led the charge to a state berth and things look even better this season. Stratford's biggest challenge will come from #10 Coppell who is also looking for a regional title.
Other strong teams looking to qualify for the state meet will be #12 Montgomery, # 18 College Park, and The Woodlands.
The girls race should be a battle between Ava Peeples and 2016 NXN qualifier Halena Rahmaan. This could be one of several future battles as all of the top runners are sophomores and juniors.
For the boys, it will be anybody's race. Look for senior Dereck Elkins and junior Haftu Knight to lead the charge. Also expected to see Sean Prendeville and Gavin Hoffpauir to help push the pace. This race could be anybody's race to win.
