With the district meet less than a month away, the McNeil Mavericks boys track team gave the rest of District 14-5A a reality check by finishing second to Converse Judson at the University of Texas at San Antonio Relays over the weekend.
Taking on 29 schools from across Central Texas and beyond - including fellow 14-5A schools Round Rock, Georgetown and Stony Point - McNeil relied on its strength in the field events, most impressively first place finishes by Casey Strong (shot) and Aaron Williams (long jump) to buoy it into the silver-medal spot.
And while the unofficial finish - the meet does not name team champions, but the Mavs take second when their points of the day are added up - may not be up to par with the team's gold-medal outings at Westlake, Copperas Cove and McNeil to start the season, it's no less impressive for coach Glenn Roberts, who said his unit has one goal.
"We won district the last two years and we're trying to go for a third in a row," he said.
It looks like the Mavs have the weapons to do just that. Strong, a 5-11, 265-pound sparkplug with great technique on the spin, finished fourth at state as a sophomore and has continued to improve this year. His throw of 54-04.00 easily outpaced that of second-place finisher Jesus Garza (53-00.00) of Stony Point.
"Casey's won all the meets he's gone to this year," said Roberts, noting Strong had to miss the Copperas Cove meet because he was at the regional powerlifting meet where he qualified for state.
"He's got a lot of leg strength. He's just really strong and really good."
Strong was also the runner-up in the discus with a toss of 150-03.
University of Texas football recruit Aaron Williams showed off his athleticism by winning the long jump with a leap of 21-11.25. The district champ a year ago, Roberts said Williams is just beginning to tap his potential in the event.
"The big difference [for Aaron] this year is just being able to split time with baseball and work on his technique," he said. "The baseball coach [Tom Collins] has done a really good job of helping us work together so he can be better."
The teams' final gold medal came in the rare, in high school, Olympic 400-meter hurdles by Mark Carlson in 57.16, a new record for McNeil by the sophomore.
On March 20 the Mavs travel to Pflugerville Connally for the Cougar Relays. The district meet will be held April 14-16 at Dragon Stadium.
