Ranking the Records Countdown - #3

Boys #3
BRAD SPEER, Wichita East, High Jump 7'4.5" (1984)
IAAF Score: 1,135 points

How high was Brad Speer's 7'4.5" high jump in 1984?

High enough that over 25 years later, it would've still led the U.S. high school list every year but one since 2010.  It would've been "only" second in 2017.

High enough that the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame has a display set up in its museum with a high jump bar set at 7'4.5" so you can see for yourself just how high Speer's record really is.

High enough that it was the #3 mark in U.S. history at the time and it's still #12 on the all-time U.S. high school list.

High enough that even future U.S. high jump Olympians Ed Broxterman (Baileyville/Kansas State, 7'3" in 1992) and Nathan Leeper (Protection/Kansas State, 7'1" in 1995, and the greatest name in history for a high jumper) couldn't break it in high school.

Speer would go on to Kansas State University, where he competed in the NCAA National Championships and won two Big 8 Conference titles.

The next time you're in Wichita, swing by the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame and see for yourself just how high 7'4.5" is, and step back in time to when a Kansas high schooler flung himself over that bar.
