Salute to Seniors- Kagan Angers

Splendora High School

Most memorable race: The 4x400 (definitely my favorite race)  at district my sophomore year. We had went to state my freshman year and there was a lot of pressure on us because everyone wanted to beat us. I was second leg and another school thought they were going to try to get me to chase them. I ran my race and a kid ran real fast out in front of me and I stayed steady. I ended up passing him and eventually beat him pretty good. That was the first time I ran a 49 split (I eventually ran a 47 split at regionals). Also, I could hear my dad telling me to "Eat him up" which was the only thing I could hear.

Biggest Competition: Bellville High School, they really liked to "talk" even though they always came in second to us.

Greatest Accomplishment: Going to State all four years in high school (4x400, 4x200, 200, long jump)

If I could do it again: I would have ran the open 400 if I changed anything,  even though I am a big believer that God had me exactly where he wanted me in order to be successful at the things He wanted me to be successful at. Everything happens in His way and His timing.

Biggest Obstacles: My coach leaving my junior year and tearing my meniscus my senior year, last long jump attempt senior year (I still went to state in long jump though)

Miss the most: My team of course.

Advice to younger athletes: Never stop working hard and remember how important noble character is. Hard work and good character can take you farther in life than talent any day.

Influence from coach: My coach has showed me that I now want to become a coach . He has showed me I want to treat kids the right way. You have to be equal and fair, never single one kid out as a favorite. The focus has to be on the team. No sport is individual, even track.

College Plans: I am running Division 1 track for Sam Houston State University Bearkats. I am majoring in Forensic Chemistry. I thought I would use that in the Criminal Justice field but I am leaning more towards becoming a coach and eventual athletic director and teaching high school chemistry.

I would like to say thank you to My first coach, Clay Mayo. He helped me as an incoming freshman. He started building my confidence way before track even began my freshman year. He had the seniors telling me how important I was going to be to the track team. He showed me correct ways to run, correct form, running tactics, and also gave me a love for track I never knew. He convinced me to run the 4x400 when I didn't think I wanted to. I went from hating it to loving it. Also to Coach Pope for coaching me my junior and senior years. He took over a position with rich history and allowed me to excel my last two years of high school.

I would like to add this, the most important part: Every single bit of my success was choreographed by God himself. His grace and mercy was the reason I had the accomplishments  I had. He used tools such as ability given by Him, coaches, and teammates to get me there but he designed each and every aspect perfectly. All the glory goes to Him and not even to myself. Without Him, none of this matters.
