Paige Hofstad is new state leader in 5K after 17:36 at St. Andrew's

Last year's 5A state champion in New Braunfels junior Paige Hofstad did not let a little rain slow her down on Saturday at the St. Andrew's Invitational. Instead she propeled through the precipitation to run the state's leading 5K time of the season with a swift 17:36 clocking. It was junior heavy up front with the top 5 finishers all among the class of 2016 including Hofstad and the race for second went down to the end between Ashley Driscoll of Round Rock and Gema Sanchez of Ann Richards School both timed at 18:24, but Driscoll edging out Sanchez for runner-up honors.

The team race was just as close with only 5 points separating the top 3 teams in Austin Bowie (1st, 70 pts), Vandergrift (2nd, 75 pts), and Round Rock (3rd, 75 pts).

The Georgetown boys went to work up front grabbing 3 of the top 4 places led by race champion Darren Medrano in 15:41, while teammates Jaqwae Ellison (2nd, 16:12) and Dale Hardt (4th, 16:19) followed him not long after through the finish line chute.

Their team score of 35 points and team average of 16:22 on the 5K course put them well ahead of the next best teams in the meet.
