Salute To Seniors: Brock Collins

Brock Collins - Forney

What was your most memorable race/moment?

My most memorable race would defiantly be the Meet of Champions 2k steeple I feel it was my first big meet, and my main goal was to place. So I was happy that everything worked out for me and that I came in with a third place finish with a huge personal record.

Who would you consider your biggest competition over your four years?

My biggest competition would no doubt be Kyle Garcia from North Forney High School. We have been racing since middle school and every race has been one to remember. Towards the end of our high school career, I realized how great of friends we had become because of this crazy sport. I can’t wait to continue our rivalry in the southland conference.

What was your greatest accomplishment?

My greatest accomplishment was going to state my senior in cross country. I will never forget the look on my coaches’ faces when I finished the race. There was no better feeling knowing I had made my coaches proud; it was actually one of my favorite life moments.

If you could do it all over again what would you change about your running career in high school?

I wouldn’t change anything. I believe everything happens for a reason. Even though I faced some challenges, I still think I’m a better athlete and runner because of them.

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?

The biggest obstacle was managing my time with running, friends, family, girlfriends, school and jobs. I couldn’t please everyone no matter how hard I tried. This was really hard on me because by nature I am a people pleaser. I lay in bed countless nights stressing about the day ahead of me.

What will you miss the most?

I will miss my team no question about it. My teammates were brothers and sisters; my coaches were my parents. It makes me upset knowing I won’t be seeing Lauryn and Caylon every morning and listening to them begging me to cut my hair. Evan always had my back. Another thing I’m going to miss was hurdle practice with Coach Watts. It’s unfair how much of an athlete she was and here I am busting my knees on those stupid hurdles. It was so funny because she kept encouraging me, and I knew I sucked.

What advice you would give to younger athletes?

I would encourage all young athletes to wear sliders when you run cross country.

What influence has your coach had with respect to your performance and overall life goals?

My coaches taught me how to believe in myself and showed me what it was like to have hope. They showed me what it meant to have goals and how to achieve them. They believed in me when I didn’t. They don’t really know what they mean to me, but without them I wouldn’t be going to college, and I wouldn’t have the confidence I do now. They have been a huge impact on my life, and I wish I could keep them forever.

What are your college plans?

I’ll be running cross country and track for the University of Central Arkansas, and I’m going for a degree in kinesiology.

Who would you like to say thank you to?

I would like to thank my friends, family, coaches, competitors, girlfriend, teammates, and Aquaman.

What was the funniest thing that happened during your running career?

The funniest thing was Coach Cook laughing for what seemed like an hour nonstop for no reason. She just kept going and going; it was hilarious. Since laughing is contagious, everyone was laughing so hard we were crying. That just made it even funnier. But I promise you without a doubt the Forney High School distance squad is by far the funniest team in Texas. Every single day we would get side stiches not from running but from laughing so hard. They are the best group of people I have ever met.
