Summer Training Blog: Evan Luecke

Monday 6/29 - Speed day for me! During season last year, I would always say “ I need to work on speed.” Unfortunately I asked to be put in the 800. I don’t know why I said put me in it. I hated it. Its sprinting a 400 and then seeing how long you can hold it. So i got to our community park and started my warm up. I ran 15 minutes, just running around the soccer fields. After the 15 minutes were up, I did my stretches and got ready for my run. The workout was a progression run for 5 miles. So I started at 6:59, dropped to 6:44, then 6:29, 6:19, then my last one I felt good after so I picked it up, to a 5:57. my total time was around 32 minutes and 28 seconds. I still don’t know how that stands. I did my cooldown which is similar to my warmup just not as much movement such as a skips, b skips etc… was just more dynamic stretching, and hip mobility.

Monday evening I get back to the gym, I do my leg workout, and finish with abs. I usually take my time when I lift, mainly because I just like going at my own pace, for that stuff. Usually will think about my form and what I need to do to fix it.

Total today 8 Miles including mile and a half warm up and cool down.

Tuesday 6/30 - I was feeling sore from yesterdays workout and this morning i had to get up early and

help move my brother move furniture into a storage unit. So I didn’t get to do my run in the morning. I did my run around 6. Mainly because work at 8! So if any of y'all drive through Forney, Texas. Stop by Whataburger! My run was my recovery run. It was relaxing and just got to think about things in life. So I did 8 miles in 56 minutes. I was supposed to go 55 but i hate when I stop a run and you’re so close to finishing the mile. Most of the time I will go ahead and finish the mile. Of course I did a mile cooldown.

I didn’t get to do my workout because I worked till 2 am. Even though I could’ve when I was done because I have a membership at Anytime Fitness. I was just too tired to do anything and I want to get a run in the morning without being Completely tired.

Total 9 miles today. Lets see how i feel in the morning.

Wednesday 7/1 - This morning did not start off good. Me, brock and his brother Zane were supposed to go for a run at 6. I got home from work at 2 in the morning, so I was already tired enough. I wake up and I make sure he is awake before I get up and leave. So I text him, he is up and when I get to the park, I get a text from him saying… “I’m not coming tho…” I was so frustrated, this whole week I have been doing my workouts alone. Yeah sometimes its nice to get away and all, but it's to the point where there is no motivation to do the run, cause no one is doing it with me and I am Extremely tired. So I go back home and sleep for a couple of more hours till my dog wakes me up. It was around 8:30 so it wasn't extremely hot yet. I do my 15 minute warm up, then go to my 25 minute run, which I wasn’t feeling so good even though I still hit pace. After the run, I drive to the High School and go to the back fields where the “hills” are. They aren't very big, but they are steep. I did 10 hills, gradually inclining every 30-45 seconds. After the hills I went into a 15 minute cool down. Total mileage today was 3.8 miles in the 25 minute run averaging 6:51, then with the 15 minute warm up and cool down, I would say i got 3 miles with those together.

Around 7 miles today. Give or take with the hills.

Thursday 7/2 - This morning was a lot better, even though I still got home at 2. I got to run with people. My old teammates Caylon and Lauryn were up there doing their workouts. It was fun running with them. Then we went our separate ways. Lauryn had a 25 minute fartlek, Caylon had a bike ride and me I did my double today. I did 4 miles in the morning and then 5 at night before work. the 4 miles this morning felt fantastic. I might of started out a little bit to fast with a 5:56 opening mile. I was feeling great. The 5 miles at night felt even better. I hit pace every single mile and just felt free. I dont know what was different but I just started running, there was something that sparked a fuel.

So total today was 11 miles counting the mile warm and the mile cool down (did both for the 5 mile run.)

Friday 7/3 - I dreaded getting up this morning, I was tired, exhausted and had no motivation to run. That just made everything worse. The run was a 45-60 min with 10 strides after. I decided to do 60 minutes just to try and get my mileage up. Even though i should’ve done less I feel like. The run itself was awful. I was dead and needed something to get me awake and give me some type of motivation. I was off my 6:56 pace a little bit and was hitting around 7:08 the first couple of miles then dropped down to 7 flat then down to 6:56 for the rest of the run. Although I really didn't want to run, I stuck through it. 5 of the 9 miles were at 6:56 so I really couldn’t complain. I just felt exhausted and fatigued. The strides were a lot better. I did them for 150 meters each.

So almost a mile worth of strides, but with the cool down and all that fun stuff I ended up with 10.9 something miles so I just ran a little more to make it 11.

Saturday 7/4 -

This morning was my best run I have had in a loooong time. Yeah, I have had some good runs but this

run everything was perfect. So, last night before I went to work I looked up to see how long the katy trail was, then I got distracted and started searching for trails in the DFW area. White rock was starting to get a little boring and I wasn’t about to run that alone. So I found this trail in Rockwall, around 30 minutes away from where I live. So I decided I’ll check it out and see if its as good as it said it was. So I get there and all I see is trees, a dirt road and two paths. One for bikers, one for hikers. I went to the hiking trail and immediately was on pace. I already knew this was going to be a good run. So I continued running, I felt free and away from everything. The run was just perfect. I went alone which I usually don’t for long runs, but I wanted to make sure this place was legit. It sure was.

So overall the run was great, got 11 miles in around 6:50 pace in 75 minutes, plus the mile cool down. Overall 12 miles.

Sunday 7/5 -

Today was active recovery day. My legs are feeling a little tired and I am glad I get the day off of running. I go to my friends pool and he lets me do my swim workouts. His pool is around 6 feet deep, I am maybe 6 foot if not a little less. So I just treaded water for 30 minutes then I just swam around the pool changing strokes. The weather was nice, it was cloudy and windy, and just enough humidity to make the pool feel good.

Week In Review -

This week was like a rollercoaster for me, one day my training was feeling great. The next day I was miserable, etc… I didn't feel confident on some of the runs but, others were some of the best runs I have had this summer. Another thing, Running alone can be a good thing, it helps relieve anger, stress and basically get you relaxed. It also can be a bad thing, earlier this week when I wasn’t feeling good for the runs, I really wanted to stop, but I knew if I did stop, it would only make the workout worse. It’s always good to have your training partner there with you to keep you going.
