Summer Training Blog: Evan Luecke

Monday- Probably one of my toughest and not smarter workouts. I had a 6 mile progression run. The run was supposed to start off at 7 like usual and go down 15-25 seconds a mile. That didnt workout like I wanted to. Me, Steeven and Edwin went to White Rock Lake in Dallas, to do our workout. We start running a 15 min. warmup, got almost 2 miles, then we do our stretches and all that. Then we start. Mile run was too fast 6:44. Then 6:40, 6:25, 6:12, 6:20, finally 6:13. I was struggling that 5th mile. I knew it wasn’t smart to go out that fast. I definitely suffered the rest of the run for that. I was feeling tired and dead. Finished strong though, even though it wasn’t how fast I wanted. We did a 15 minute cool down we got about 1.7 Miles. Me and Edwin both were catching calf cramps and mine scared me a little bit because in track season my calf bothered me for a while. So I was just hoping it was just a simple cramp.

Total miles- 9.6 Miles

Tuesday- Today, My legs were feeling a little dead. Not so much to where they were sore, but to the point where they were hurting. I had a recovery run today so I did 9 miles at around 7 flat pace. Total time was 62 minutes. Later on that day I went to go do my workout. I had arms and abs. Well I always do abs, but anyways the workout was pretty tough with 5 sets of bench, lat rows, lat pulls, curls, tricep dips and pushups. Then did abs. I ended up going to the park after and my friend Dom, asked me to run a mile with him at 6:30 pace, I was like why not. Overall, I feel really good. The body is back to normal I think.

Total miles-10.

Wednesday- Today was a double for me. I did 30 minutes in the morning 4.5 miles around 6:40 pace, felt real good and was hoping my hills workout tonight would be the same. Later on that day, I go swimming for around 2 hours playing water basketball, then we got a little bit and played kroket. It was actually pretty fun. Then I meet up with Steeven at Porter Pond. We do our 15 min warmup and got around 2 miles in. Then we found these hills that were long but not as steep. We were hitting around 20 seconds each. We did 4 of them there then we moved to a street called Los Lamas. This street was the toughest part. It was long and steep. It was about 30 seconds of incline. This is where I was struggling. It was around 100 degrees, me and him both were dead, I was just the one struggling to finish. I guess it wasn't my day. I did finish strong though. My legs were Dead though. So I wasn't feeling to good, but I got over it. Then we did about a 7 minute cool down. Which was about a mile. I do not know how many miles we got with the hills. So for what I am thinking, I got around 8 miles. Not for sure though. 7.5 for sure.

Thursday- This morning I got up a little earlier just because it's starting to get real hot at around 8 and I'm over here dying on my runs. This mornings run was a medium/long run so I planned on doing 10 miles today. The run felt real good. I was doing it alone and just around my small town in Forney, Texas. I was a little tired from yesterday but overall I was going pretty good. I was around 6:50 pace feeling great. After my run I tried to ice but our training room wasn't open. I was thinking the ice baths would be back but, it wasn't. The run overall felt good and once again I went swimming not as long but still for a while. I just hope tomorrow will be a better run.

Friday- This morning I was going to go to the Trail I found a couple weeks ago, but I had no one to go with and it wasn't worth it to go out there alone. So I went and did my weight lifting in the morning, I did arms and abs. I went to work later that day, and as soon as I got off, I was supposed to run with Edwin, he texted me earlier that he couldn't make it for reasons and I didn't get it, till I told him I was on my way. So I had to do this run alone. I did a mile warmup then all the stretches and stuff and then started out my run. I started off at 6:20 pace then slowed down the rest of the run at around 6:53 pace. That was it until I started getting chased by two pugs. I stopped real quick just to calm them down and made sure they found there home. Then the run continued back to the run. I overall got around 10 miles. 8 miles in the workout, took me around 56 minutes. Mile warmup and about a mile worth of strides, after.

Saturday- Long Run Saturday! A day in the week I look forward to. I don’t know why, I just do. Today I asked Edwin if he wanted to go, I found out he did his earlier, and Steeven couldn’t because he was busy all day. So I asked Brock, if he wanted to go. He went, so we went back to the trails that we went to last week. This time me and Brock were running and then we went off trail to explore, we ended up getting lost which actually was fun. There was a slippery hill right by the creek, I don’t know why we went up but trying to go up I misplaced my footing and I WHAMSAUCED. It was honestly pretty funny. I sat there for about a minute trying to get the mud off me. We went back to the trail finding our way back. The run was real good. We started off fast, ended up around 6:50-7:05 pace. Really wasn’t the plan, but with the hills and the turns and the slippery creek. It was probably one of my favorite runs this summer. Got to explore, run and enjoy the nature as it is. We got around 13-14 miles in. Then we stopped and got slurpees. Post long run slurpees was probably one of the greatest ideas.

Sunday-I had my cross train so I went with my friend Tim, and we went to the fox hollow pool to do a swim workout. I had 60 minutes, so what I did was tread in the middle of the pool since that was the deepest, it was like around 5’6”. I did that for about 30 minutes then, I just did laps around the pool, doing all kinds of different strokes. I felt real good but I’m also feeling a little tired. I guess this was for the better though.

Week in Review- This week was pretty good for the most part. I mean there were some runs that were harder, like mondays progression run. Overall I felt real good, took care of my self, and not trying to get injured. Thats my main thing is trying to stay injury free, if I can do that I will be good. It was fun getting to run with Edwin and Steeven. Having them push me through the workouts. I think the one thing I learned this week is run smart. Its not about who wins the first mile. Its about getting your base and getting ready for racing season.
