Southlake Carroll Invitational Rewrites National Rankings!

Girls Varsity 6A Recap

Recap: (Watch all race videos here!)

With perfect conditions and a flat fast course the girls individual race was one for the rankings list! The top three times from the meet all rank within the top 15 in the country with 3 more in the top 30. The field was led by New Braunfels Senior Paige Hofstand, who traveled up I 35 to compete with some of the top teams in the Metroplex area. Hofstand came in as the heavy favorite, she took the race from the gun opening up a large lead on the rest of the pack. Each mile she gained more ground and proved she deserved the title, running U.S. #1 17:23. This was only Hofstad's 3rd race of the the year (including track) and first 5k, after battling back from an injury. She was overwhelmed with emotion after the race and excited to get back to the sport she loves.

The race playing out behind Hofstand was a close battle through the mile mark between Houston Memorial's Khayla Patel, and sophomore Elizabeth Reneau from Argyle Liberty Christian. As the race went on it started to string out. In the end it was Patel who would place second with a new U.S. #8 time of 17:46! Patel has had two solid races in a row now after finishing second last weekend at the Woodlands Friday Night Lights Invite 2 mile running 11:23. Reneau finished in third only two seconds over the 18 minute barrier. Her time of 18:02 is the top sophomore time in the nation so far this year.

Another nation leading sophomore is Abbey Santoro who led the Keller ladies to the team title. Santoro placed 8th in the meet running 18:27. That time ranks her the 14th fastest sophomore in the country. The young Keller squad took home the team title with 71 points. Their strong leaders in Santoro and Julia Black helped give them an advantage over 2nd place. Another fairly young squad who came in 2nd was Lewisville Hebron, led by senior Anna Elkin who ran 18:18 to finish 6th. The Southlake Carroll girls finished 3rd on the day led by senior Chantal Van Der West and sophomore Olivia Arriaza who placed 16th and 17th respectively. Southlake rested some of their top varsity runners, and still finished in 3rd with only a 39 second gap.
