At track meets, you don't normally get to meet the record holder in your event. Especially when the record is almost 50 years old. On Friday night, Carter Blunt got to do just that. Blunt raced the 1600m and won running 4:10.89. That mark was only four seconds off the class 5A record of 4:06.14. After the race, Blunt was approached by Robert Gonzales who holds the record.
Gonzalez set the record back in 1967 when they used to run the mile. In our interview, Gonzalez's tells us how the record was set on an old cinder track. This makes the accomplishment even more impressive. It might be awhile before we see another athlete challenge Gonzalez's state record. Carter Blunt was definitely the man who could have got it done. Blunt is arguably the most decorated Texas distance athlete in recent history. The UCLA commit holds nine total individual state titles between XC and track. On Thursday Blunt set the class 5A 3200m record running 8:58.86. That mark breaks his own record from 2015.
