Austin Zirkel can probably be best remembered for his epic race at the cross country state meet. It was a battle between Zirkel and fellow sophomore Cash Kunkel both competitors raced hard in the muddy conditions battling all the way to the line. Since then the Medina sophomore has been running well on the track. At this year's state track meet, Zirkel placed 5th in the 3200m and 4th in the 1600m. He PR'd in both running times of 4:34 in the 1600m and 10:03.89 in the 3200m. His 3200m PR dropped almost 30 seconds from freshmen year to sophomore year. On the first day of competition, he got his 2nd overall in the 2K steeple and first in his age group. This was his first time ever running the steeple. He's not done competing yet. The rising junior will also be competing in the 3000m, 800m, and 1500m this weekend at Region 19.
