Meet Preview: Greenhill Luke's Locker 6 Mile Relay

DALLAS -- The stage is set for the 35 th annual Greenhill / Luke's Locker 6 Mile Relay meet on Saturday, August 24 th at Norbuck Park in Dallas, Texas. What started off with a few area coaches and meet officials batting around ideas for a new and different kind of cross country meet has grown over the years into a traditional kick off meet for schools from Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. Three of those founders, Tom Holodak, John Pritchett and Herb Sheaner, will be working the meet on Saturday. What they will surely oversee is a very competitive field of close to 50 schools, all running hard, hurdling hay bales, and challenging themselves on the Norbuck Park hills. Luke's Locker and HOKA are back again to support Greenhill in hosting the 6 Mile Relay meet.

The first race of the morning will be the boys varsity. Keller won the 6A/5A team title last year, but won't be returning. That leaves the door open for a new four person squad to break the finish line tape first. Who that might be is anyone's guess. Lewisville Hebron is coming off a strong opening race at the Friday Night Hawk Invite last weekend and Wylie looked good at that meet, too. A Christian Rivera led Kauffman relay team could be right in the mix. The Norman (OK) boys are always pushing the pace at the 6 Mile Relay and look for the same this year. Both Southlake Carroll and Flower Mound will be at the meet, but with their junior varsity runners. The boys 4A and under varsity race might be one of the more competitive events of the morning. Thirty seconds separated the top three teams last year with Decatur emerging out front. Coach David Park's team will be back and St. Mark's should challenge them, along with Casady School of Oklahoma City.

Similar to the boys race, the girls 6A/5A division seems wide open. This could be the year for Highland Park to claim the title and it's been 20 years since they won the big race. They will lean on Sophia Olilai to lead the way. One of the state's best individual runners, Colleen Stegmann from Frisco Reddy, will likely be racing. Stegmann had a banner sophomore year, finishing 3 rd over in the UIL 5A state meet race. Can she find three other teammates to lead the way on Saturday? Don't overlook Lewisville Hebron, McKinney Boyd and the Norman girls (3 rd at the 2018 Oklahoma 6A state meet). Greenhill is the three time defending champions in the 4A and under girls race. They will be led by Maddie Hatfield and Kaiti Ness, fresh off their win at last weekend's Heat Wave Relays. Kinkaid, the defending SPC champions, will look to dethrone them, along with Decatur and Anna.
