UIL State Cross Country Meet Class By Class Preview

2A

Girls

Individual: Kyla Kane, Brayleigh McGill, Allison Hedrick, Josey Whitaker

Kane, McGill, Hedrick, and Whitaker have all run sub 12 for the season and should be the lead pack of runners this weekend.

Kane was a fab freshman last season as she won the state meet and has turned into a super sophomore this season. She has the fastest time heading into tomorrow's race, but she will get some competition. Hedrick and McGill were third and fourth last year and return again to give challenge. Whitaker is a tough running freshman from San Antonio and she could pose some danger to the girls as well.

Sleeper: Sydney Reynolds

Reynolds was 11th last year, and definitely wants to win a cross country medal tomorrow. She has several medals from track season, so she knows how to run and what it takes to compete at this level.

Teams: San Saba, Sundown, Gruver

San Saba got their state title last year and they return more talent. Sundown was the champion prior to that and they want to get their title back. Sundown ran a fabulous race at Region 1 and will be hard to beat. Add their motivation and we will have a big time race. Gruver is fast too and their pack running will give them a good shot at the win too.

Sleeper: Wellington

Wellington will be back in the pack as a team, but Kane's performance will keep them in the running. If they can get an inspired race they will be dangerous.

Boys:

Individual: Bryan Landeros and Henry Fierro

These two juniors will not doubt duke it out again as they did at the Region 2 meet. The state title should come down to these guys.

Sleeper: Duncan Naylor

Naylor is the top returner from last year's state meet. If his fitness is good enough for him to stick with the leaders. He is tested and approved at this meet, so watch out for him.

Team: Valley View, San Antonio Great Hearts Monte Vista, Seymour, Port Aransas

GH Monte Vista are the defending state champs and they have a good shot at repeating. Valley View is a program with a tradition and they want to take the top spot. Those two teams could be in for a two way battle, but Seymour and Port Aransas can run. Seymour will need to use their ability to run tight to stay in the mix and so will Port Aransas.

Sleeper: Poolville

Poolville has a low stick and they are tight on the back end. If they can move that back end up about ten places and 15 seconds they will be in the running for first place.
