Recap: Big Questions Answered At Texas A&M HS Indoor Classic

Laila Owens was named female athlete of the meet

When the outdoor season ends, it's usually several months before we see many of the track and field athletes again. That leaves several questions heading into the new season. The Texas A&M High School Indoor Classic is always the first meet of the season and gives us insight to some of the many questions.

This weekend, we found out who had been putting in some work and who was ready to take the helm this season and which athletes could become the faces and names of this track and field season.

In the sprint events, we saw Laila Owens, Jayla Hollis, and Autum Wilson have big weekends. Owens and Hollis both ran faster than the former meet record of 23.90, with Owens setting the new standard at 23.55. We also witnessed Auhmad Robinson explode for big performances in the 200m and look like he is ready to take the crown in the boys sprints.

There were also big distance, field event, and relay performances.

Brynn Brown was absolutely amazing with her 10:08.11 2 Mile performance and meet record. Then Bailey Goggans and Krianne McBride both ran under the former meet record in the 1 Mile with Goggans' 4:53.73 setting the new mark.

In the boys distances, we saw Owen Likins set the track on fire with 1:53.93 and 4:20.19 wins in the 800m and 1 Mile. Anthony Monte and Abraham Avila-Martinez both crushed the meet record with their exciting finish. The meet record goes to Monte with his 9:08.63 win.

Claire Bryant showed that she is ready for the 2020 season as she won the high jump and then broke the meet record in the long jump with her 20-02.25 jump.

The H-Town Hurricanes ran a blazing fast time to take the girls 4x400 relay record with their 3:44.78 and a 9:23.74 by Celerity TC took down the former 4x800 relay record.

There were also impressive high school team performances in the midst of some strong club teams. The Fort Bend Marshall boys and The Woodlands girls showed that they can compete in a world of club teams. They more than held their own in relays and individual events and should both be treated with caution when competing against them this upcoming season.
