SECTION SHOWDOWN VIRTUAL CHALLENGE
VS.
- This is a dual meet team competition that matches the all-time marks in one section against those in another using dual meet scoring and individual event participation rules.
- There are six sections that range between 101 and 198 schools: Central, San Diego, Los Angeles, Central Coast, North Coast, Sac-Joaquin. Those are the six in the dual meet competition.
- There are three sections with a combined total of just 105 schools: San Francisco, Oakland, Northern. Those sections don't have the depth of athletes to be able to compete in this event. Sorry, but they are not part of the dual meet tournament.
- And then there's the Southern Section, which includes 37 percent of the schools in the state. We have something special lined up down the road to involve the beast that is our friends in the SS.
- Meets are held at neutral sites on a perfect 70-degree evening with no wind. Scoring is based on the best all-time marks from each section. Times may be converted. Altitude is not a factor.
- Sections are limited to three entries per event and athletes are limited to four individual events. Dual and double-dual meet scoring is 5-3-1 for 1st through 3rd with a 5-0 score for both relays. There is separate competition for boys and girls.
- Meets are presented in order of events with updated scoring after each event. The approximate conclusion of each field event is slotted throughout the track event schedule.

Between Berkeley and James Logan, the North Coast is loaded in this event with Berkeley (45.13 in 1981) coming out on top. Score: NC 5, CS 0. Running Score: NC 5, CS 0.

A section change for Mission Prep's Jordan Hasay (4:39.13 in 2007) gives the Central Section the win with Santa Rosa's Julia Stamps (4:42.79 in 1997) and Livermore's Cheri Williams (4:43.30 in 1978) making it just a single-point advantage. Score: CS 5, NC 4. Running Score: NC 9, CS 5.
High Jump
With all-time state leader Latrese Johnson of Clovis (6-2.75 in 1985) setting the pace and the likes of Mt. Whitney's Tonya Mendonca (6-1 in 1983) backing her up, this is going to be a sweep when Immanuel's Tara Fleming (6-0 in 1995) and Celia Willis (6-0 in 1988) are factored in. Score: CS 9, NC 0. 100 Hurdles
With three runners among the state Top 10, the NC Section moves into the lead with a 9-0 sweep. No. 3 Trinity Wilson of St. Mary's (13.15 in 2011), No. 5 Mecca McGlaston of Dublin (13.18 in 2015) and equal No. 8 Julian Purvis of St. Elizabeth's (13.32 in 2007) dominated. Score: NC 9, CS 0. Long Jump
Get used to sweeps. For the third straight event, the same section placed 1-2-3 with Hercules' Jamesha Youngblood (21-0 in 2007), James Logan's Jernae Wright (20-11.50 in 1996) and Holy Names' Ke'Nyia Richardson (20-10.50 in 2007) listed among the Top 8 all-time. Does a win by Bishop O'Dowd's Tierra Robinson-Jones (52.37 in 2018) signal another NC sweep? Nope, Buchanan's Hannah Waller (53.01 in 2016) barely edged Deer Valley's Chizoba Okodogbe (53.06 in 2010) for second place. Score: NC 6, CS 3. Running Score: NC 33, CS 17.
Discus Throw
If the NC is going to sweep, the CS will have to have a few 1-2-3s of its own. Like in the discus where all-time state leader Anna Jelmini of Shafter (190-3 in 2009) tops the victory stand followed by Stockdale's Alex Collatz (180-9 in 2010) and Bakersfield's Melisa Weis (176-10 in 1990). Six more CS throwers have better marks than the first NC thrower but only the top three count. Score: CS 9, NC 0. Running Score: NC 33, CS 26.

St. Elizabeth's Ashton Purvis (11.17 in 2010) stands third on the all-time list-just behind Angela Williams and Marion Jones, and she wins this easily. But a photo finish could not decide between Clovis' Jenna Prandini (11.34 in 2010) and Berkeley's Sharon Ware (11.34 in 1980), so they finished in a tie for second. Score: NC 7, CS 2 . Bakersfield North's Linda Goen (2:05.43 in 1977) was as good as they come. She still stands No. 4 all-time which gives her the victory over Livermore's Jessica Spies (2:05.84 in 1981) and all-star teammate Mikaela Smith of Clovis North (2:06.85 in 2014). Score: CS 6, NC 3. Running Score: NC 43, CS 34.
Shot Put
Although Shafter's Anna Jelmini (54-4.75 in 2009) swept the weight events, Ygnacio Valley's Kristin Heaton (52-11.50 in 1993) kept the damage to a minimum with Bakersfield's Dawn Dumble (50-11.75 in 1990) third. Again, the Central Section was ultra-deep but couldn't get the sweep. Score: CS 6, NC 3. Running Score: NC 46, CS 40.
300 Hurdles
Just like the 100 hurdles, the North Coast Section is deeeeep here, producing another sweep. The James Logan duo of Thandi Stewart (40.45 in 2010) and Natasha Neal (40.86 in 1998) were joined by Hercules' Jamesha Youngblood (41.08 in 2007). Score: NC 9, CS 0. Running Score: NC 55, CS 40.
Pole Vault
The Central Section's dimming hopes got a huge boost in this event where four Top 10 vaulters produced a nice point swing. Clovis West's Elizabeth Funk (13-9 in 2019) led the way, followed by San Joaquin Memorial's Kira Costa (13-8.50 in 2003). Clovis North's Brooke Tjerrild (13-6 in 2017) and Clovis West' Anginae Monteverde (13-6 in 2011) secured the final point. Score: CS 9, NC 0. Running Score: NC 55, CS 49.

Even though Mission Prep's Jordan Hasay (9:52.13 in 2008) polished off a fine distance double, Livermore's Cheri Williams (10:06.3 in 1978) and Santa Rosa's Julia Stamps (10:12.20 in 1996) grab the next two spots to give the North Coast Section no worse than a tie with two strong events remaining. Triple Jump
The horizontal jumps and hurdles produced 36 NC points with Holy Names' Ke'Nyia Richardson (44-5.50 in 2007), James Logan's Ciarra Brewer (43-4.25 in 2009) and Moreau Catholic's Alitta Boyd (42-11.75 in 2009). That's No. 2, No. 5, and No. 8 all-time, keying the victory dance. Score: NC 9, CS 0. Running Score: NC 77, CS 54.
4x400 Relay
James Logan scored points all over the place including tagging on the long relay from its 1996 team that ran 3:40.95. Score: NC 5, CS 0.
