What We'll Miss At State: Brynn Brown Destroy Her Own Record

- - -

Denton Guyer junior Brynn Brown has had a roller coaster high school career.

Freshman year, an injury ended her cross country season right after district. She came back in track season to finish second in the 1600m. Sophomore year was a healthy success; she was second at the state cross country meet and then she returned in the Spring to win both the 1600m and 3200m state titles. As a junior, injury hit once again in the Fall and Brown was unable to run at the state cross country meet.

This outdoor track season, she showed early that she was healthy and in shape to have a special track season. COVID-19 had something to say about that as it was the cause of the entire season being canceled for the rest of the country.

This year, the state meet could have been even more special than anyone could imagine for Brown. Her 3200m win last year broke the UIL state meet record in the 3200m when she ran 10:09.91, but in February, she had run even faster at the Coppell Relays when she ran 9:58.58. That was the fastest outdoor 3200m for a high schoolgirl even recorded that early in the season.

So, if Brown ran that fast that early, what would she have been able to do with two plus months of training still to come? If she ran over 10 seconds faster in February than she did in May the previous year, how fast could Brown run in this year?

With a career of peaks that include state titles, state records, and national championship races and valleys of injury filled what ifs, the 2020 state meet could have been the Guyer distance runner's opportunity to prove she is Texas' best distance runner ever.

Instead, she will have to play the coulda, woulda, shoulda game with every other athlete, coach, parent, and fan.
