The Sam Houston State men's cross country team placed fifth in the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islander Splash Invitational Friday in Corpus Christi.

McNeese State won the five-mile team race with 28 points. A&M-Corpus Christi was the men's runner-up with 45 points followed by UT-Arlington 109, Angelo State 118, Sam Houston 137, Texas-Pan American 148, Texas A&M-Kingsville 152 and Central Arkansas 163.

Joshua Sawe of McNeese won the men's intercollegiate individual title with a time of 25 minutes, 39 seconds.

Top finisher for Sam Houston State was Joey D'Eramo with a time of 27:06. Other Bearkat men's finishers and times included Julius Michael 19^th 27:17, Patrik Krol 28^th 27:50; Clint Anders 36^th 28:13, Travis Kocurek 41^st 28:42 and Austin Brown 51^st 31:36.

The Bearkat women's cross country team placed sixth in the meet.

The University of Texas won the 5,000 meter women's race with a team score of 28 points. Rice was second with 42 points, followed by A&M-Corpus Christi 78, McNeese 110, UT-Arlington 124, Sam Houston 176, Texas-Pan American 212, Angelo State 222, Central Arkansas 263 and Saint Mary's 290.

Heather Olson of Rice won the women's individual championship with a time of 17 minutes and 0.5 seconds.

Kylie Fitzgerald was Sam Houston's top finisher, placing 29^th with a mark of 18:50. Other Sam Houston women's finishes and times included Sara Collazos 31^st 19:01; Victoria Gemeny 33^rd 19:08; Haleigh Pustka 36^th 19:14; Crystal Santos 47^th 19:45 and Megan Williams 56^th 20:53.
