Flashback Friday: Cole Sprout Wins Last State Title in 1600m

The 2020 Valor Christian (CO) graduate produced all-time marks in his career, while collecting state titles along the way. As a freshman, Cole Sprout he placed second at his Colorado state championships in cross country, but then won three consecutive tiles from 2017-2019. During his 2018 season, he placed third at the Nike Cross Nationals, his highest finish at this competitive meet. While running during the outdoor season, Sprout earned consecutive state titles in the 1600m and 3200m in 2018 and 2019.

Sprout won the last outdoor state title of his high school season in the 1600m. Last year, he ran a time of 4:13.78 seconds. With this season being his last year of competition as a high schooler, the Colorado state record of 4:10.98 seconds set in 1981 by Rich Martinez would have been in jeopardy.

Sprout also ran a time of 8:46.41 seconds in the 3,200m, which was ranked 20th on the all-time list and was first in the nation in 2019. In May, he ran in the Quarantine Classico and was a part of a historic mile. The mission of this meet was to have as many athletes break four minutes in the four lap race. He placed second with a personal best of 4:02.42 seconds behind Leo Daschbach's 3:59.54 who was the 11th high school boy to run faster than four minutes in this event. Sprout will be continuing his athletic and academic career at Stanford in the fall.
