Meet Preview: Region 1 Cross Country Championships

Canyon post race interview at 2021 Canyon Inv.

Class 4A

The Canyon girls entered the 2021 season as the back-to back-to back state champions and in those years, they haven't had a hiccup in Lubbock. That shouldn't change this year.

They Lady Eagles clearly won't be seriously challenged until Round Rock. Abree Winfrey was runner-up last year and the third place finisher two years in a row at state. Her teammate Avery Brown  (11:07) is just a freshman and proof Coach Baca's program keeps developing runners. Consider this weekend the education she needs to be prepared to help lead at state.

Lexi Maul (Pampa) checks in at 11:16 and Kallie Bullard (Pecos) at 11:28 as the only other girls under 11:30. The rest of the girls field will be up for grabs.

The girls team battle will be the same; Canyon and then the rest up for the taking. Decatur graduated a lot last year, but you can never count out Coach Parks and his crew.

Look for Dumas, Hereford, Brownwood, Glen Rose, and Lampasas to all be heavy players.

It's a new day in Region 1-4A. Edwin Gomez and Samuel Ashley have dominated the region for four years and they've graduated.

The season leaders this year are Chris Moreno (San Elizario) - 15:36, Angel Sanchez (Fort Worth Diamond Hill-Jarvis) - 15:42, and Mason White (Argyle) - 15:50 have all gone under 16:00 minutes.

Moreno is the second top returner from last year's state meet with his seventh place finish. The top finisher from last year is Derrick Bible (Decatur). Bible only has a SB of 16:55, but he can run about a minute faster and is a wily veteran.

The boys team battles from this region have been epic in the last couple of years. San Elizario and Canyon have been two teams in the middle of those dramatic battles and they should be in the same position on Monday.

San Elizario can run a 16:39 team average and they have a low stick in Moreno and their 2 - 5 runners can run within 11 seconds of each other. Canyon can run near a 16:57 team average and can run within 46 second from 1-5.

The team who they'll be chasing will be Argyle. Not only do they have White, but Tyler Westrom is a low 16 minute guy and the rest of their scorers are legit.

Other major players to watch out for will be El Paso Riverside, Big Spring, Decatur, and Stephenville.
