Runners hit regionals

The Angelo State men's and women's cross country teams closed out the season Saturday as the squads competed at the NCAA Division II South Central Region Championships in Abilene. The Rambelles placed 11th at the regional meet while the Rams finished in 15th place.

Senior Brittney Heath paced the Rambelles with a 27th-place finish in the six-kilometer race with a time of 23:05 as the only ASU runner in the top 50. Freshman Emeline Crutcher (23:48) placed in 55th place, just ahead of senior Paige Massingill (23:48) in 56th place. Sophomore Alyssa Priest finished in 76th place (23;23), freshman Jessica Boudreau 112th (25:28), freshman Brittney Welchon (26:16) and sophomore Jennifer Flanery 131st (26:39).

Missouri Southern claimed the women's title with 18 points leading six Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletics Association teams in the top seven. Dallas Baptist out of the Heartland Conference was second with 84 points while Truman State had 97 points for third place. Midwestern State was the top finisher out of the Lone Star Conference in eighth place with 280 points.  Angelo State was second among LSC schools with 317 points. On the men's side, senior Brian Carroll was the Rams' top finisher in 45th place in the 10-kilometer race with a time of 33:24. Senior Shannon Cunningham placed 57th (33:41), while junior Nate Gonzales was 82nd (34:34). Sophomore Robert Hummingbird finished 90th (34:47), freshman Nick Wargo 103rd (35:51) and freshman Isac Valdez 109th (36:10).

Missouri Southern also claimed the men's title with 56 points while Southwest Baptist was second with 81 points and Pittsburg State third with 86 points as the MIAA swept the top three positions. Tarleton State was the LSC's top team in fourth place with 97 points. The Rams were the seventh men's team in the standings with 370 points. For complete men's results, click here.
