On Saturday evening, Taylor HS (Taylor, Texas) graduate Fred Kerley on the 2022 World Athletics Championships 100m title in Eugene, Oregon.
The 27-year old recently won the silver medal at last year's Tokyo Olympic Games and the World Championship gold in the sport's signature event awards him the title of "Fastest Man in the World".
Kerley didn't take the usual path to this distinction. After graduating from Taylor in 2013, his path took him to South Plains Community College and then to Texas A&M prior to his professional career. The even less traveled path of 400m specialist for much of his career to the 100m and 200m in a professional career speaks to his talent and abilities. It wasn't until last year, prior to the Olympics that he decided to pursue the 100m.
Kerley's prevail in a time of 9.86 over Marvin Bracy and Trayvon Bromell marked the third time Americans swept medals in the 100m event. It's the first time at the World Championships to go along with the 1984 and 1991 Olympic Games.
