Region 1-2A

Girls

Region 2-1 is one of the best in the UIL 2A classification and it also has its responsibility for the Region of Doom monicker.

Last year's state champion Kyla Kane graduate so there will be a new regional and state champ this season. There are plenty of solid suitors ready to take that position. Christoval sophomores Madyson George and Presley Polk finished fifth and sixth last year at the state meet as freshmen.

Also returning, but finishing just outside of the top-10 at last year's state meet are juniors Francisca Ybarra (Sundown) Kiley Barrera (Plains).

This year, Wink runners have the top times heading into regionals. Freshman Delaney Dodd-Fernandes enters with a 11:54 and senior Autumn Smith who finished 15th last year at state enters with a 11:56 for the second best time of the region.

The team battle will be intriguing next week. Last year, Region 1 teams swept the trophies at the podium. Things get even more exciting with many of the top ranked teams being in the region. Christoval, who captured the runner up trophy last year is ranked No. 1 in the CCCAT poll and Wink is ranked No. 2. Gruver who took home the third place trophy last year from the state meet is ranked No. 4, New Deal is ranked No. 6, Farwell ranked No. 7, and Roscoe is ranked No 8.

With six of the top 10 ranked teams in the state vying for only four qualifying spots, this race will be must see!

Boys

Last year, Sawyer Hamilton (Plains) was third at regionals and he went on to run 16:50 to finish sixth at the state meet as a freshman helping his team to the bronze at Round Rock.

However, the region is loaded this year with guys who have already ran some significant times. Ozona sophomore Corey Ybarra has a 16:39 for the fastest time of the year in Region 1. Quanah junior Dwight Don Juan (16:51) and Julian Rodriguez (Reagan County) (16:54) have also run under 17:00 this season and could be front runners.

As far as the boys team race, the amount of teams vying for the four spots are as deep as the chase pack of individual boys. Plains was third last year. They return all five runners, seven scorers and are currently the No. 1 team in the state. However, they're not the only ranked team in the region. No. 7 Christoval and No. 8 Sundown will be ready to run and could make a solid argument for these three teams taking up several of the qualifying spots.

Also figuring to be major players next week will be New Deal who has the top team average (18:14) heading into next week and Booker (18:22) who isn't too far behind them.
