Meet Preview: UIL Region 2 Championships

Region 2-3A

Girls

The 2022 Region 2-3A championships figures to be as good as ever. Last year, six girls ran sub 12:00 at the regional meet. This year, six girls come into the meet already breaking that barrier.

Pilot Point junior Addison Hite earned her all-state title when she finished ninth last year at the state meet. She comes into regionals with a 11:38 from the Hoka/McNeil Invitational

Heading to Grand Prairie and running well are Braleigh Wood, Madyson Pence, and Kendall Davis from Quitman. Wood has a 11:32 PR, Pence has a 11:42 PR, and Davis also checks in under 12:00 with a 11:58.

Also coming in under 12:00 already this season are Rory Hake (Whitesboro) and Elaine Eborn (Commerce). Hake was fourth last year at regionals and is no stranger to colossal races. Eborn was fifth last year at the regional meet and has state meet experience as does Hake.

The team race should be an entertaining one. Two teams come in ranked in the CCCAT top-10 with Whitesboro checking in at No. 3 and Quitman ranked No. 5. Pilot Point and last year's state qualifier Callisburg are also in the mix.

Boys

Boyd senior Riley Nedrow is catching his stride and with the championship season here, expect to see him focused on a state title. After a mid season transfer last year, this is his first cross country season on the Boyd team. His 15:08 is the top time heading into the regional.

Waskom senior David Magdaleno and Winnsboro David Soto have both run under 16-minutes this year and could potentially challenge Nedrow.

Although not cracking 16-minutes yet, Hayden Long (Ponder) at 16:17, Grant Sims (Elysian Fields) 16:18, and Oliver Roberts (Commerce) aren't too far off and will challenge for a regional title.

The CCCAT has Boyd ranked No. 7 in the most recent poll. They have a 17:37 team average and have been one of the best 3A boys teams all season long. Commerce is also ranked No. 8 and is only one spot behind Boyd. They have the fastest team average coming into regionals with their 17:18.

While not ranked, Ponder and Bonham both have team averages under 17:31 and faster than Boyd. That figures to make an exciting race.
