Multi athletes take spotlight


New Mexico Classic and Multis / New Balance Collegiate Invitational / Texas Tech Invitational

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The ACU Wildcats' multi-event performers finally got to show off what they could do during the indoor season, and all three of them posted qualifying point totals for next month's NCAA Division II indoor championship meet.

Competing at the New Mexico Classic and Multis meet at the Albuquerque Convention Center, Jessica Withrow qualified in the women's pentathlon while both James Hardin and Parker Petty posted qualifying point totals in the men's heptathlon.

Withrow finished sixth in the pentathlon with 3,653 points, the second-best point total in NCAA Division II track and field this season.  She also posted a provisional qualifying mark for the regular portion of the championship meet in the high jump when she cleared 5 feet, 6.50 inches in the pentathlon high jump.

On the men's side, James Hardin finished eighth in the heptathlon with 4,797 points, and he was followed by Parker Petty, who finished 13th with 4,605 points.

Hardin's best effort in the competition was in the 60 hurdles where he finished in 8.68 seconds for 818 points.  Petty's best point total came in the pole vault when he cleared 14-9.00 for 760 points.

In the regular portion of the meet late Friday, Kevin Johnson provisionally qualified for the national meet in the 60 hurdles with his fourth-place finish in 8.23 seconds.

Tyler fleet also provisionally qualified for the meet in the weight throw with a fourth-place finish and mark of 57-9.00.  On the women's side, Destinee Nixon bettered her existing provisional qualifying mark in the triple jump as she finished eighth with a mark of 38-7.75.

The Wildcats also had athletes competing at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational at The Armory in New York, N.Y., and they posted several solid performances at that meet as well.

Amos Sang finished second in the 5000 meters with a solid provisional qualifying mark of 14:18.08.  Andrew McDowell tied the nation's top time in the 60 hurdles on Friday with his preliminary time of 7.95 seconds.  He finished third in the final in 7.98.

On the women's side, Wanda Hutson bettered her provisional time in the 200 meters in a time of 24.86.

ACU will be back in action next weekend at the Air Force Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo.
