Freshman Kai Gutierrez (Southlake Carroll) has already run 9:25 3,200m this outdoor track and field season

Every week we will bring you members of either the freshman and sophomore classes who are having a good season and who we believe might become leaders or stars in the sport
Girls
Michaela Landers (Waxahachie)
With only one high school meet on her resume, Landers has wasted little time putting up some big marks. A 25.45 run in the 200m might not be eye popping, but for a freshman's first high school race, it leaves intrigue for her upcoming races.
Going 37-feet in the triple jump and 19-feet in the long jump isn't exactly subtle for a freshman. Those were her field event marks at the Cedar Hill Opener which we already know was one heck of a meet. Landers' coming out party proves she will be an intriguing young athlete to watch this season.
Elsa Harvey (Austin Westlake)
With just one meet under her belt in what looks like her first high school meet running individual events, Harvey ran the 400m and competed in the high jump and the pole vault.
She went 4-8 in the high jump and 8-0 in the pole vault and there is plenty of room for growth for the Chaparral frosh. However, with a 57.87 run in the 400m at the Rouse Tri Meet, growth in this event drums up a lot of excitement is and why she is on this list.
Moyosoreoluwa Bakare (Klein Oak)
Bakare is a sophomore at Klein Oak and has already competed in the 200m and the triple jump.
At the Dan Green Invitational, she jumped 39-6 in the triple jump last weekend. That is the top performance in the classification and is a stark improvement from last year's 36-5 best mark.
Boys
Kai Gutierrez (Southlake Carroll)
Gutierrez is a member of the perennial distance powerhouse Southlake Carroll program. He was a key member in this year's state championship cross country squad and ran a 15:12 personal best.
Freshmen don't always transition into track season as well as they do on grass. Don't tell that to Gutierrez as he doesn't seem to follow that mold, rather taking the path down the other side of the trail. He ran 9:25.75 last month at the North Texas Winter 3200m/800m in the 3,200m to give him the top ranking for the freshman class. He also has a 4:30 performance in the mile from the start of the cross country season.
Graham Hummel (Dallas Home School Athletics Association)
Hummel is a lot like Gutierrez, a very talented freshman distance runner and he proved that in the fall cross country season on grass. He ran a 15:10 PR for 5,000m.
He ran a 4:23.08 in the 1,600m on January 11th at the North Texas Winter 1600m. That would be more than impressive for a freshman at the end of the track season, but to do it in the second week of January could be just the start of things for Hummel's mile running this seasons.
Braylon Davis (Waxahachie)
Davis brought the juice to the Cedar Hill Opener this past weekend when he ran 10.53 in the 100m and 20.47 in the 200m. Those two runs were his first of the outdoor track and field season showing the Waxahachie sophomore means business.
Davis demonstrated his progression during the indoor season by dropping from a December 7.17 in the 60m and 22.56 in the 200m all of the way down to 6.87 and 21.52 by the end of January. Now that he is outdoors in the elements and on the long track, we'll really get to see the possibilities of his progression.
