Brooke French's quest to become all-state in three sports this school year is closer to reality.
The sophomore from Canyon Randall punched her ticket to state in the 3,200-meter run at a regional meet on April 18.
How she got in a position to that, juggling soccer and track and field, turned into a story that will be told in Amarillo for years.
On April 9, she ran in the 3,200-meter at the UIL 4A Area 03 & 04 meet in Andrews, taking first in 11:10.34.
She then hopped on a plane and flew to Georgetown for the UIL Class 4A Division II soccer finals on April 10 at 11 a.m.
Randall beat Wimberley, 3-2, in PKs to become the first panhandle team to win a soccer championship.
French started at forward and played 78 minutes.
In the 43rd minute, she scored for the Raiders. She even took a penalty shot in what went 8 rounds to decide a winner.
She got to celebrate a little, then she got back on a plane and headed back to Andrews for day two of the regional meet.
French was one of 11 players selected to the UIL All-Tournament soccer team for Class 4A Division II.
She got to Andrews for the 1,600 and took second in 5:14.30.
Due to soccer, she gave up running in the 800 -- just a week after taking second at the UIL 4A District 04 meet, setting a personal record of 2:18.87.
Earlier this school year, she took third at the UIL State Championships in cross country for the Raiders.
Add the all-state soccer medal, she's one trip to the podium away from having a banner 2024-25 school year.
French and her track and field coach, Rebekah James, joined TX Mile Split to talk about the sequence leading up to a busy area weekend and how it all played out not only that weekend, but the entire spring season, playing two sports.
