BATON ROUGE - A victory by Sam Houston State's women's 4x400 meter relay highlighted action for the Bearkat track and field team in the Bearkats' final regular season meet of the indoor season at the LSU Twight Invitational.
Monika May, Folashade George, Tonicia Wimberly and Jessica Fisher teamed to post a time of 3:49.93 for the victory.
Chris Gilchrist topped men's performances as the number one collegiate competitor in the triple jump. Gilchrist was second behind an unattached competitor with a mark of 49 feet, 11.25 inches. Sam Houston's Artis Edwards place fourth with a triple jump of 49 feet, 1.75 inches.
Kristi Hermes was the runner-up in the pole vault and Shelbie Zotyka placed fourth. Both Bearkats cleared a height of 11 feet, 7.25 inches. Hermes earned the higher placing on the basis of fewer misses.
Sam Houston's men's 4x400 relay placed third as Leon Banks, John Thomas, Roger Rueweler and Michael Courtney flew around the oval in 3:20.21.
Christina Webb was fourth in both the women's weight throw (54 feet, six inches) and the shot put (45 feet, three inches).
Jason Russell placed sixth in the weight throw with a mark of 57 feet, five inches. Scottie Jones was 10th in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.31. Ryan Oakes and Cutter Bernhard place ninth and 10th in the men's pole vault with identical leaps of 15 feet, 3.75 inches.
Ty Spiller qualified for the finals of the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.85 seconds. Jordan Heggie missed the finals by .04 seconds with an 11th place time of 8.89. Spiller was 9th in the finals with a 9.18 clocking.
Jenny Zoch and Ambra McCuin both placed 10th in the shot put (40 feet, 6 inches) and long jump (18 feet, 7.25 inches), respectively.
The LSU meet was the Bearkats' final warm-up before the Southland Conference Indoor Championships to be held next week (Feb. 26-27) at the University of Oklahoma's indoor facility in Norman, OK.
