UIL 4A Boys 800 Recap: Victor Aviles Is On Top Once Again

2025 UIL 4A Boys 800m

The 4A boys' 800-meter final at the 2025 UIL State Championships was a gritty, tactical race that saw a return to glory for Victor Aviles (Burnet). The 2023 state champion was unable to defend his title last year due to illness, but he returned to the track with a vengeance this season, clocking a personal best 1:53.44 earlier in the year and proving his form earlier in the day with a strong second-place finish in the 3200 meters. Despite the fatigue from that double, Aviles summoned the strength needed to reclaim his title.

The race started aggressively, with Charles Anderson (Dallas Carter) taking command early. He led through 200 meters and still held the advantage at the 400-meter mark with a split of 57.61, closely tracked by Aviles. As the runners moved into the second lap, Daniel Anderson (Salado) made a decisive move at the 600-meter mark to join the front pack. But that move lit a fire under Aviles, who surged into the lead heading into the final turn.

As they entered the home stretch, a thrilling duel unfolded between Aviles and Charles Anderson. Despite already having one race under his belt that day, Aviles fought off fatigue and held off the challenge from the Dallas Carter sophomore, stopping the clock at 1:54.25. Anderson gave chase valiantly but had to settle for second in 1:54.79, showing tremendous poise for a 10th grader. Daniel Anderson claimed third with 1:56.12, rounding out a podium full of underclassman potential and senior redemption.

Just off the podium, Donovan Dixon (Devine) placed fourth with a strong kick to finish in 1:57.29, while Ryan Jeanneret (Levelland) and Noah Zarate (Canton) followed in 2:00.30 and 2:02.92, respectively. In a final that tested both tactics and toughness, Victor Aviles reminded everyone why he's been one of the most reliable middle-distance runners in Texas over the past two years-and this time, he walked away with the gold once again.
