NORMAN, OK - The Sam Houston State men stand in fourth place and the Bearkat women are in eighth after the first day of competition at the annual Southland Conference indoor track and field championships being held at the University of Oklahoma's indoor facility.
The Bearkat men dominated the long jump with C. J. Patterson winning the conference title in the event with a leap of 24 feet, 6.25 inches. Artis Edwards (24' 3.75") was the runner-up and Henry Jordan (23' 5.25") placed fifth.
Michael Courtney put himself in a strong position to score points for Sam Houston in the running finals Saturday afternoon as he finished first in Friday's 200 meter prelims (21.86) and fourth in the 400 meter dash (48.59).
Four Bearkats qualified for the finals of the 60 meter hurdles including Scottie Jones, 8.10, John Thomas, 8.19, Jay Newman, 8.26 and Matthew Johnson, 8.29.
For the women, Monika May qualified number two in the 400 meters (57.23) and Jessica Fisher qualified fourth in the 60 meter dash(7.69)
Four Bearkats reached the finals of the 60 meter hurdles with Jordan Heggie third (8.70), Ty Spiller sixth (8.81), Sabrina Starr seventh (8.77) and Pashe Moore 10th (9.05).
Ambra McCuin placed third in the long jump (19-00).
UTSA leads the men's competition with 47.5 points with UT-Arlington second at 37. Sam Houston is in fourth place with a 27.5 point total.
Stephen F. Austin has a commanding lead in the women's team competition with 62.5 points. Texas State is a distance second at 34 points.
