Angelo State University Athletics

Track opens season

The Angelo State men's and women's track and field teams opened the 2010 season with a bang Saturday with 10 provisional qualifying marks at the Incarnate Word Invitational in San Antonio.

Coming of their best-ever finish at the NCAA Division II National Championships this past spring, the Rambelles recorded seven provisional marks while the Rams had three marks that provisionally qualified for the 2010 NCAA D-II Meet.

Senior Aisha Adams, a four-time All-American and the national champion in the heptathlon a year ago, started her final season with the Rambelles with a provisional mark in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 14.27.

Senior Celethia Byrd, a three-time All-American in 2009, provisionally qualified in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes Saturday at Incarnate Word. Byrd ran a time of 11.97 in the 100 and finished the 200 in a time of 24.40. Byrd placed eighth in both the 100 and 200 at the 2009 NCAA D-II Meet.

Senior Chrystal Ruiz recorded provisional marks in both the 100- and 400-meter hurdles. Ruiz had a time of 14.49 in the 100 hurdles and a time of 61.14 in the 400 hurdles. She was an All-American for the Rambelles in 2009 in the 400 hurdles and placed ninth in the heptathlon at the 2009 NCAA D-II Meet.

Adams and Ruiz along with seniors Andria Nussey and Kris Crockett also recorded a provisional qualifying time in the 4x400-meter relay, finishing the event in a time of 3:47.70.

Freshman Summer Sutherland made an impact in her debut with the Rambelles as provisionally qualified in the vault with a mark of 11'9.75".

On the men's side, senior Tyler Orlando had a provisional-qualifying toss of 199'5" in the javelin at UIW. Orlando placed seventh in the event at the 2009 NCAA D-II Meet, earning All-American honors. In addition, the Rams' 4x100-meter relay (41.24) and 4x400-meter relay (3:12.64) both provisionally qualified for the 2010 meet.
