Luke Bone Runs Into Texas And National History Books In 800m

Luke Bone wins the 800m at the Texas A&M Bluebonnet Inv.

Recent Stephen F. Austin High (Austin,TX) graduate Luke Bone closed out his stellar prep career in explosive fashion at the Nike Outdoor Nationals in Eugene, Oregon. Running in his signature event-the 800 meters-Bone delivered a performance that not only capped off his 2025 season but also rewrote his place in Texas and national history.

Competing in the U20 division with several collegiate runners, Bone finished a razor-close second to High Point University's Camerin Williams, crossing the line in 1:46.87 to Williams' 1:46.81. The performance marked a massive breakthrough for the future Texas Tech Red Raider, who had consistently hovered in the 1:49 range throughout the season. Prior to this race, Bone's personal best was a 1:49.23 from the UIL 6A State Championships, where he also placed second.

This weekend's result catapulted Bone into elite territory. His 1:46.87 makes him the second-fastest high school 800m runner in Texas history, trailing only Cooper Lutkenhaus (Justin Northwest), the 2025 national record holder with a 1:45.25. Nationally, Bone now ranks No. 7 all-time among U.S. high school boys in the event.

Only a select few have ever run faster: Lutkenhaus, Michael Granville (1:46.45, CA, 1996), George Kersh (1:46.58, MS, 1987), Will Sumner (1:46.53, GA, 2022), Cade Flatt (1:46.68, KY, 2022), and Owen Powell (1:46.63, WA, 2026). With that performance, Bone didn't just end his high school career on a high-he etched his name into the history books.
