More Qualifiers at TSU

The Angelo State track and field teams picked up four more provisional marks and improved on four others as the Rams and Rambelles competed at the Tarleton State Invitational Thursday.

For the women, senior Celethia Byrd improved on both her 100- and 200-meter dash performances at TSU. Byrd won the 200 in a time of 23.95 and placed third in the 100 in a time of 11.88. Byrd was also part of ASU's 4x400-meter relay squad that improved upon its provisional mark with a second-place finish in a time of 3:47.68.

Senior Aisha Adams added third provisional mark, recording a jump of 5-8 to win the event at TSU. Adams had already collected provisional arks in the 100-meter hurdles and the long jump. Senior Chrystal Ruiz added a third provisional mark as well Thursday, recorded a mark of 5-6 in the high jump. Ruiz had previously provisionally qualified in both the 100- and 400-meter hurdles. Freshman thrower Kimberly Williams recorded her first career provisional mark as she placed second in the shot put with a throw of 44-9.5.

In other women's action Thursday, senior Brittney Heath placed second in the 1,500-meter run with a season-best performance of 4:48.30. Sophomore Jayda Spencer won the hammer throw (129-0) and placed second in the javelin throw (119-11).

For the Rams, sophomore Trenton Dalton improved on his provisional mark in the 400-meter hurdles with a second-place finish in the event at TSU with a time of 53.64. Senior thrower Andrew Crookham had his first provisional mark of the season in the discus throw, placing second in the event with a throw of 165-10. Crookham also had a personal-best throw of 153-9 in the hammer to place second in that event.

In other men's action, sophomore Nick Smith placed second in the 200 with a season-best time of 21.49. Senior James Howell placed second in the 400-meter dash in a time of 47.85, but did not improve on his previous provisional mark. Junior Tyler Orlando (189-5) and sophomore Jacob McDonald (182-11) placed first and second, respectively, in the javelin. Senior Brian Carroll (32:46.01) and sophomore Robert Hummingbird (34:19.85) placed second and third, respectively, in the 10,000-meter run.

The majority of the men's and women's teams will take a break next week as ASU hosts its annual Spring Break Multis. The heptathlon and decathlon is set for Mar. 18-19 at the LeGrand Sports Complex.
