Patient. Intelligent. Gritty. Fierce. Those are just a few of the qualities that define Austin Vandegrift runners, athletes who have consistently helped carry Texas distance running into one of its healthiest eras.
Since taking the helm, Coach Collin Sully has overseen a steady pipeline of talent at Vandegrift. Each season, as one group of top athletes graduates, another Viper emerges to step onto the state's biggest stages. The cycle has become a tradition of excellence, blending both individual stars and team strength into UIL 6A podium finishes.
Last year, that mantle fell to Kai McCullough, who elevated himself as both the leader of the Vipers and a name recognized across the state and nationally. Integral to Vandegrift's podium success over the past two seasons, McCullough exemplifies the team's racing philosophy: patience early, fitness tested in the middle, and a furious press when it matters most.
This past weekend at the Marcus Coach T Invitational, McCullough put that model on full display. Though he got out quickly with a 4:45 opening mile, he maintained composure and strength through the second mile in 4:46. In the final 1,800m, his 5:09 closing split was second only to eventual winner Ruel Newberry, and more than 13 seconds faster than anyone else in the field. McCullough crossed in 14:41, a new personal best and a runner-up finish that reaffirmed his elite status.
But McCullough wasn't the only Vandegrift athlete to shine. Caroline Krupa opened her season with a career-defining race. Sitting comfortably in the top 10 through the mile (5:40), she surged into second with a strong 5:48 second mile. From there, she unleashed the fastest closing 1,800m of the race in 6:07, cementing her runner-up finish. Krupa's final time of 17:37 was not only a massive personal best, but it also placed her ahead of several all-state finishers from last fall.
Together, McCullough and Krupa provided a showcase of the Vandegrift blueprint-measured, intelligent, and relentless racing-and a reminder that the Vipers continue to develop runners ready to challenge the very best in Texas.
