Byrd, Williams honored

For the second straight week, the Angelo State women's track & field team swept the Lone Star Conference Track & Field Athlete of the Week awards as senior Celethia Byrd and freshman Kimberly Williams were recognized by the league Thursday.

Byrd, a native of Austin, picked up her second consecutive honor as the LSC Female Runner of the Week after collecting an automatic qualifying mark in the 200-meter dash at the Tarleton State Invitational last Thursday. The Reagan High School product won the 200 at TSU in a season-best time of 23.95 to become the first Rambelle to automatically qualify for 2010 NCAA Division II National Championships in May. Byrd also placed third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.88, improving her previous provisional mark, and ran the second leg of the Rambelles' 4x400-meter relay that squad that also improved its provisional mark with a time of 3:47.68 at TSU.

Williams, a native of Roby, recorded her first career provisional mark at TSU as she placed second in the shot put with a throw of 44-9.5. She was the top D-II performer in the event. Williams also placed eighth in the discus with a throw of 118-8.

ASU is hosting its annual Spring Break Multi-Events Thursday and Friday at the LeGrand Sports Complex. The complete Ram and Rambelle squads return to action Saturday as they travel to Waco for the Baylor/Dr. Pepper Invitational.
