Ruiz earns automatic mark

Angelo State senior Chrystal Ruiz wrapped up a victory the heptathlon at the ASU Spring Break Multi-Events Friday with a career-best point total of 5,210 points, automatically qualifying her for the 2010 NCAA Division II National Championships in May.

After winning three of four events Thursday, Ruiz opened the second day of competition with a second-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 18-11.25, matching a pesonal best. The mark also provisionally qualified Ruiz for the event for May's national meet. Ruiz then placed 10th in the javelin throw, with a toss of 98-1 against a stiff wind, and finished the meet with another personal best, placing second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:18.66.

On Thursday, Ruiz set personal bests in three events. She won the 100-meter hurdles (14.29), high jump (5-6) and 200-meter dash (25.51) and plaed ninth in the shot put (31-6.5). Ruiz had personal bests in the high jump, shot put and 200.

Senior Andria Nussey had a solid second day to earn a provisional-qualifying mark, finishing in third place with 4,869 points. Sitting in fifth place after four events, Nussey placed third in the long jump (18-7.75) and won the 800 (2:13.60), provisionally qualifying in both open events.

Sophomore Cathryn Rittenberry closed her first collegiate heptathlon in 11th place with 4,095 points. Runner-up Lindsey Lettow from Central Missouri also had an automatic mark as she ended the event with 5,163 points. There were also two other participants that had provisional marks in addition to Nussey, Central Missouri's Angela Selby (4,854) and Anne Carlson (4,730).

For the men, freshman Robert Malczewski competed in his first collegiate decathlon and finished in 10th place with 5,812 points. Central Missouri's Darius Walker won the decathlon with 6,989 points, automically qualifying him for the 2010 NCAA D-II Championships in May.

With Saturday's Baylor/Dr. Pepper Invitational cancelled due to impending inclement weather, the Rams and Rambelles will return to action Saturday, Mar. 27. ASU will send groups to both the Texas Tech Open in Lubbock and the Texas-Arlington Invite in Arlington.
