2025 SPC 3A Boys Cross Country Championship - Individual Race Recap

Under the humid, late-fall skies of Tomball's Spring Creek Park, the final major Texas cross country league championship of the season didn't disappoint. The SPC 3A boys race was billed as a battle between individual stars and deep, tightly packed squads-and it delivered on both fronts.

From the opening gun, Houston Awty International's Felipe Beltran set a commanding pace. The junior, who was third a year ago, looked poised and confident from the first mile and pulled away late to win the individual title in 16:22.50. His victory not only marked redemption from last year's near-miss but also capped off a stellar season that saw him contend against some of the top runners in the state regardless of classification.

Behind him, St. Andrew's Episcopal's Reed Robinson, the pre-race favorite and last year's fourth-place finisher, ran strong but couldn't quite match Beltran's final surge. Robinson crossed in 16:34.20 to secure silver. He was followed closely by Will Oliver of Cistercian Prep, who earned third in 16:35.00, improving on his 7th-place finish from last season and proving his rise as a consistent front-runner.

Fort Worth Country Day's Ty Williams claimed fourth in 16:44.50, while Alexander Sutton of St. Andrew's rounded out the top five in 16:47.80, continuing his steady climb from 13th in 2024.

The team race began to shape up quickly from there. The John Cooper School, anchored by Zach Jefferson (6th), Jacob Bailey (7th), and Issac Ortega (9th), was in close contention, trying to hold off both Cistercian and Awty. But it was St. Andrew's incredible depth that sealed the deal. With Milo Amoroso (10th), Henry Flake (11th), and Cyrus Shoghi (12th) all finishing within 45 seconds of each other, St. Andrew's locked down five runners in the top 12, a championship-winning formula.

Team Race Summary

The defending champions, St. Andrews (40 points)  looked even sharper this year. With a tight 0:45-second spread from their first to fifth scorer and a 17:02 team average, they dominated the field. Their depth was unmatched, placing all five scorers in the top 12. With Robinson leading the charge and Amoroso, Flake, Shoghi, and Sutton right behind, it was a masterclass in pack running. St. Andrew's proved why they were ranked among the best SPC squads in recent history.

The John Cooper School put together a tough runner-up finish (60 points), cohesive effort behind strong performances from Jefferson, Bailey, and Ortega. Their top three cracked the top 10, but the fourth and fifth positions-though solid-couldn't quite match the firepower of St. Andrew's. Still, a 1:09 spread and 17:24 average mark a big step forward for a team that finished fourth a year ago.

This year's breakout team was Cistercian Prewp (57 points) who climbed up from fifth place in 2024 and turned heads with a tight-knit top five and solid front-end power in Oliver and Brittian. A 1:37 spread and 17:28 average gave them the narrow edge over Awty. With most of their scorers underclassmen, the Hawks look poised to climb even higher in 2026.

Despite Beltran's individual win, Awty's depth couldn't keep pace with the other podium teams. Still, Keizo Dreyfus-Ishigami and Gaultier Tardy ran strong races, and the team closed with a respectable 17:32 average. They'll be in the mix again next year, especially if their youth continues to develop.

Led by Ty Williams and William Runyon, Fort Worth Country Day packed a solid punch at the top but lacked the depth of the top four teams. Their 2:33 1-5 gap was the largest among the top half of the field. Still, with a young core, they're building something strong.

The Trinity Valley School had solid performances but couldn't match the speed or depth of the podium teams. Charlie Rosell (27th) led the way as they averaged 19:19 with a 1:25 spread. The future looks brighter with many underclassmen in their ranks.

With a team average of 19:25, the Episcopal School of Dallas continued to gain experience on a winding course. Their pack was tight (0:41 spread), but lacked the low-stick needed to challenge higher. Still, the balanced scoring bodes well for future seasons.
