NXR South Girls Ind. Recap: Macy Wingard's Win Makes 4th NXN

- - -

On a typical South Texas, fast morning at the Dale Watts course, it was first-time winner Macy Wingard of Running Bengals who reshaped the race the moment the gun fired. With no prior experience on the undulating surface, Wingard showed no hesitation, pressing the pace immediately and dragging an elite lead pack of five through the opening mile in a startling 5:07. Joined by Elin Latta (5:08), Ava Cornelius (5:09), Lilly Beshears (5:08), and Laney Barnes (5:10), the group tore through the early stages far ahead of the chasers. A second pack, including Addyson Bristow, Maya Easterwood, Iris Latta, and Adeline Bennett, came through in the low 5:20s, biding their time for a long-drive surge later.

Wingard, the three-time UIL 6A champion out of Denton Braswell doubled down on the aggression in mile two, extending the tempo and forcing separation as the course opened. Latta briefly stole the lead midway through with a 10:37 split, while Barnes tucked herself neatly between the two, creating a firm front trio. Cornelius (10:47) and Beshears (10:48) held their qualifying spots, but the chase pack behind them sensed blood, with Bristow, Bennett, Easterwood, and Iris Latta all making decisive moves to set up a dramatic final 1,000 meters.

The long finishing straight at Dale Watts became the ultimate sorting ground. Wingard's unmatched leg speed proved decisive, as she launched into her final drive and powered to a 16:53, securing the first NXR South title of her career and a fourth straight NXN berth. Latta, the Texas homeschool champion, emptied the tank to stay close but settled for second in 16:55, earning her second NXN qualification. Barnes, running the smartest race of her season, stayed composed and crossed third in 16:57 for her inaugural trip to Portland.

Behind them, the battle for the final two qualifying spots exploded. Bristow, the three-time UIL 4A state champion with a 57-second 400m best and 2:06 in the 800m, used the long straightaway to unleash her kick, surging past Cornelius and Easterwood to claim fourth in 17:06. Cornelius held strong for fifth in 17:07, and although Easterwood closed well, her 17:09 left her just outside the qualifying cutoff in sixth.

In the end, the NXN individual qualifiers were: Macy Wingard, Elin Latta, Laney Barnes, Addyson Bristow, and Ava Cornelius, the five runners not on the top two qualifying teams.
