NXR South Boys Ind. Race: Caden Leonard Repeats As Champion

- - -

From the opening strides on the Dale Watts course, the race unfolded exactly as predicted. Ruel Newberry wasted no time in throwing down pressure, storming through the first mile in a blistering 4:33, a pace that instantly stretched the field and forced nearly two dozen athletes into survival mode. Dominic Matthias of Moore, OK recognized the danger early and moved up to share the load, working in concert with Newberry, Griffen Saacke, and Brody Maasen to force the entire front group into a red-line opening circuit. Meanwhile, reigning champion Caden Leonard stayed tucked only a second behind the leaders, calm, controlled, and clearly content to let the chaos settle before striking.

By mile two, Newberry and Leonard were side-by-side at 9:20-9:21 pace, with Matthias, Kai McCullough, and Brian Burns (Bentonville, AR) hanging on in a lead pack that still held close to a dozen contenders. The pace never relented; instead, it exposed anyone who had taken the opening mile too aggressively. As attacks rippled through the group, more conservative movers began emerging: Ethan Locke (Waco Valor Prep), Kai Gutierrez, Noah Strohman, Andrew Esparza, Alan Gallardo-Lopez, Ethan Garza, and Camden Gibson all surged up as the early aggressors began to fade.

But when the race hit the long, deciding straightaway, it was Leonard who looked the freshest. With smooth, unbroken strides, he opened a small but definitive gap on Newberry and powered home in 14:37, not only securing his second consecutive NXR South title, but also setting a new high-school course record at Dale Watts and punching Carroll's ticket to a 14th straight NXN appearance. Newberry, the UIL 6A runner-up, delivered the performance he needed, finishing second in 14:42 to lock in his first trip to Portland. Locke, whose season had been quieter than expected, finally resembled the athlete who ran 14:05 at Nike Outdoor, surging past fading runners to take third and earn his NXN debut. Burns continued Bentonville's rise with a strong fourth-place finish, while Matthias held on for the fourth individual qualifying spot. In the final scramble for the last ticket, it was four-time UIL 4A champion Noah Strohman who sealed the deal, finishing eighth overall and earning his second career qualification to NXN.
