Adams sets D-II record

Senior heptathlete Aisha Adams highlighted the second day of the Texas Relays at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin Thursday as she recorded the most points ever in the heptathlon at the NCAA Division II level.

With 5,795 points, Adams eclipsed the previous NCAA D-II record of 5,780 points, held by Nebraska-Omaha's Anastassia Kyvelidou in 2005. Adams placed second in the heptathlon at the Texas Relays behind Oregon's Brianne Thiesen, who ended the two-day competition with 5,942 points. Adams was one of just two non D-I athletes in the field of 22 competitors.

Entering Thursday in second place behind Thiesen by 166 points, Adams opened the second day with a personal-best leap of 20-5.25 in the long jump, the fifth best long jump in ASU history. Adams then added season bests in both the javelin throw (115-1) and 800-meter run (2:20.53) to complete the memorable performance.

Adams bested both the ASU and Lone Star Conference record of 5,670 points, set by former Rambelle Amber Miller in 2003. Adams, the reigning NCAA D-II National Champion in the event, became the second Rambelle to automatically qualify in the heptathlon for the 2010 NCAA D-II National Championships, joining teammate Chrystal Ruiz, who automatically qualified last month with 5,210 points at the ASU Spring Break Multis.

In addition to automatically qualifying the heptathlon, Adams also had automatic marks in the 100-meter hurdles (13.80) and high jump (5-9.75) along with a provision mark in the 200-meter run (24.48) Wednesday's. Adams' long jump Thursday was also an automatic-qualifying mark.

ASU had five other athletes competing Thursday. Ruiz and fellow senior Kris Crockett both represented the Rambelles in the preliminaries of the 400-meter hurdles with Ruiz placing sixth (1:01.63) and Crockett placing 19th (1:03.45). Ruiz advanced to finals of the event Saturday at 12:15 p.m. In the preliminaries of the men's 400 hurdles, junior Brian Holik placed fourth (54.87) and sophomore Trenton Dalton sixth (57.26). Both Rams advanced to Saturday's finals, also scheduled for 12:15 p.m Junior Andrew Allison was a late addition in the pole vault Thursday, but did not record a height.

Friday's morning running session begins with a rolling schedule at 9:30 a.m. Ruiz and sophomore Cathryn Rittenberry will compete in the 100-meter hurdles while senior Celethia Byrd will compete in the 100-meter dash. For the Rams, junior Ryan Adkins and sophomore Nick Smith will both run the 100 meters. The Rambelles' 4x400-meter squad will also compete Friday morning. The finals of the 4x400 is scheduled for 4:45 p.m. Saturday.

In Friday's field events, freshman Summer Sutherland will compete in the pole vault and freshman Kimberly Williams will compete in the shot put. Both those events are set for 10 a.m. At 1 p.m., sophomore Jayda Spencer will throw the discus for the women while seniors Andrew Crookham and Wade Goode will compete in the discus for the men. Later Friday evening, junior Tyler Orlando and sophomore Jacob McDonald will compete in the javelin at 7 p.m.

On Saturday, the Rams' 4x100-meter relay squad will compete at 2:05 p.m. with the men's 4x400 final taking place at 4:45 that afternoon.
