Withrow qualifies for nationals

Texas Relays Live Results

AUSTIN -- Jessica Withrow of Abilene Christian University finished 13th among 19 women who completed the heptathlon Thursday at the 83rd annual Texas Relays in Austin.

Withrow scored 4,840 points to provisionally qualify for next month's NCAA Division II outdoor championship meet.

Withrow, who was 16th after the first four events Wednesday with 2,917 points, wrapped up her multi-event competition Thursday at Myers Stadium at University of Texas with 17-5.25 in the long jump (645 points), 113-1 in the javelin (561) and 2:28.10 in the 800 meters (717).

The former Lone Star Conference and NCAA Division II champion is returning to action after a redshirt season in 2009 because of injuries.

On the first day, she ran 15.24 in the 100 hurdles, cleared 5-5 in the high jump, tossed the shot put 34-7.75, and ran the 200 in 26.59.

Brianne Theisen of University of Oregon -- a Canadian who is a former NCAA Division I champion in the heptathon and pentathlon for the Ducks -- won the 2010 Texas Relays heptathlon title with 5,942 points, and runner-up honors went to Angelo State's Aisha Adams (5,795), last year's LSC and NCAA Division II champion.

Also Thursday for the Wildcats, Tyler Fleet placed 16th in the men's university-college hammer throw with 180-1, well back of the 236-1 by winner Walter Henning of LSU.  His throw was good enough, however, to provisionally qualify him for the outdoor championship meet.

Competition resumes Friday at 9:30 a.m.  The Wildcats' 20 athletes here include two other NCAA Division II champions, triple jumper Ramon Sparks from the men's team and javelin thrower Linda Brivule from the women's team.

At the McMurry Relays on Thursday, the Wildcats added a provisional qualifier on the women's side as Paige Newby finished second in the hammer throw with a mark of 166-10.  Jessica Sloss won the event at 173-4, but that wasn't a better mark than her provisional qualifying mark from last week at Texas-Arlington.

Amanda Clemons was second in the long jump at 19-3.50, which is a better provisional mark than her previous best.  She also bettered her provisional mark in the triple jump as she finished second at 38-6.00.  Destinee Nixon won the triple jump, but her mark of 39-9.25 was over the allowable wind to qualify.
